Credits: "BEHIND WALLS" This is a documentary about a group of women who live in an Ecuadorian prison and lead a life surrounded by daily problems and difficult situations. It features the daily challenges of a small group of women who reside at a rehabilitation centre, a twenty-year-old building located in Quito. These approximately 260 women come from Ecuador, USA, Latin America and Europe and share one thing in common - they and their children suffer from the miseries of prison life in a poor country that is experiencing the most severe economic devastation within decades. "WOMEN PRISION" During the last few years Ecuador has become a transit country for drug trafficking. Most of the women drug carriers come from Europe or the United States. Those who are caught are brought to the women’s prison in Quito. The prison’s rules and regulations reflect Ecuador’s culture. The prisoners are treated according to their skin colour; clans and gangs set the rules; corruption among the watchmen is omnipresent. When a prisoner is poor, she can remain in prison for months or years – even if she committed only a minor crime. On the contrary, a wealthy inmate can get out relatively quickly. "NEW HORIZONS" Thanks to the political movement “Pachakutik” in 1996, the “indios” secured 8 seats in the parliament for the first time in Ecuadorian history. They obtained mayor representations in three towns. In 2000, they were elected into 27 town halls and 5 governmental areas. Their slogan "Ama Quilla, Ama Llulla, Ama Schua" stands for their way of thinking – hard working, not to lie, not to steal. The mayors started new projects that were designed to help the entire country. These political developments enabled the “indios” to have a voice and influence the present and future of the mestice people. "HOPE NEVER DIES" The Pastoral da Criança is renowned as one of the most important organizations in the world that is committed to the areas of health, nutrition, education and prevention of crimes against children. These social services support women during their pregnancy and lasts until the children are six years old. Thanks to the solidarity of more than 150,000 volunteers, the Pastoral da Criança was successful in reducing the infant mortality rate more than a half of all involved families in Brazil. According to UNICEF, this means that approximately 5,000 children per year can survive in Brazil thanks to the work of the Pastoral. "ENVIRONMENT KILLER-SHRIMP INDUSTRY" Until today, Ecuador has the largest mangrove woods in the world. The red mangrove species, "Rhizofora harrisonii", have trees that grow up to 60 meters. The older trees are homes for orchids, ferns, tendrils and mosses. The woods provide a habitat for more than 200 bird species; Herons and pelicans are the biggest inhabitants. The industrial shrimp cultivators have brought drastic social and ecological conflicts to the Pacific coast of Ecuador. Over one-half of the 300,000 hector mangrove woods have been destroyed due to their activities. After evaluating over 30 years of their business progress, experts estimate complete deforestation of the mangrove woods within 10 or 20 years. OCP – GO HOME! Despite 30 years of oil exploitation in Ecuador – which has brought devastating problems for the Amazon region and its inhabitants– the Ecuadorian government and a consortium of international oil companies are going to continue to make the same, irreversible mistake: endorse a project for the construction of an oil pipeline. The new pipeline threatens 11 natural parks and passes directly through the Mindo-Namibillo-Reserve, which holds a special status for environmental protection and further neighbour reserves. This region is a habitat for more than 450 bird species, of which 46 are on the way to extinction.
