This is a good film from the new director and screenplay writer, but not a great one.
When I first saw this film listed as Spains’ entry in the category of Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards on the grid at the New York Film Festival (September 2007), I was excited to see “Guillermo Del Toro presents” tagged to its title. My first thought was about the film Pan’s Labyrinth and what a statement it made in the 2006 world…

Saturday, January 5th, 2008United Artists Strikes Deal with WGA, Tries on Some Fantasy
Saturday, January 5th, 2008Filed under: Deals, United Artists, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand, Tom Cruise
Some major major news on the strike front seems to be leaking out today, with an official announcement expected to come at some point tomorrow (according to Deadline Hollywood). Looks like United Artists (aka the movie studio run by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner) is in the process of inking a deal with the WGA that's very similar to the one they made with David Letterman's Worldwide Pants. Said deal, if it goes through, would allow United Artists to work with writers on whatever upcoming projects they have planned, making them the first such studio allowed to do this since the strike began. Damn. Score one for Tommy Boy! It's not yet known which films will take advantage of this interim deal right off the bat, but we do know that Oliver Stone's Pinkville was recently postponed due to problems with the script. Chances are, with the cast for that flick already in place, it will be one of the first delayed productions to be back in business. Of course, this is all subject to the deal actually going through.
On the other hand, United Artists could get right to work on a literary property they just optioned for seven figures. While all this interim agreement talk continues, The Hollywood Reporter tells us UA has optioned the film rights to Ranger's Apprentice, a fantasy series written by Australian author John Flanagan. According to HR, it "follows the adventures of an orphan boy named Will who becomes an apprentice ranger and fights to keep the mythical kingdom of Araluen safe from invaders, traitors and other dangers with the help of his master Halt." Yup, that sounds like just about every fantasy series being optioned these days, but what's even more interesting is that writer-director Paul Haggis was in talks to adapt and direct at one point before the strike happened and halted those discussions. Haggis doing big-budget fantasy? Bit of a stretch if you ask me -- what do you think?

Friday, January 4th, 2008Kelly Brook sunbathes topless
Friday, January 4th, 2008
After a long day of Britney Spears insanity, I’m glad to see my constant vigil of Kelly Brook’s vacation has hit the jackpot. Here she is sunbathing topless in St. Barts. It’s almost like Kelly Brook knew I was having a rough day so she took her boobs out. She's a keeper. You hold on tight to that one, Billy Zane. And not just because you’ll die old, bald and alone if you don’t. NOTE: All pics are full of NSFW breasty goodness.
Penelope Cruz shares a lesbian kiss with a special someone
Friday, January 4th, 2008
In these screenshots Penelope Cruz plays some sort of hot lesbian librarian in her brother Eduardo Cruz’s new music video “Cosas Que Contar.” And who’s that woman Penelope is kissing, you ask? Maybe it's, oh I dunno, her sister Monica. The idea was cooked up by Eduardo who wanted to generate some controversial publicity, according to FOX News:
“I don’t think it was a wise move for Penelope, as she has always been considered a very classy actress and it wasn’t like she was doing this for a ground-breaking film,” said Adam Weiss, CEO of Weiss PR in New York City (who does not represent Cruz). “But then again, nothing in Hollywood is surprising. People have done worse things and become much more famous as a result.”Wow, I can honestly say that the last two people I’d want making out in my music video would be my sisters. Unless, of course, I never wanted an erection ever again. Then, yeah, this is exactly the route I would take. NOTE: Secret kudos to Eduardo Cruz for pulling this off. Hey, they’re not my sisters.
UPDATE: Britney Spears won’t be arrested, not on drugs, police say
Friday, January 4th, 2008"There was a time where she was within the residence and wasn't available to be speaking to the officers, apparently," she said. "There was no threat to the children."The police are also confirming that Britney Spears was not on drugs and will not face charges:
"Police resolved the conflict," Aguirre said. "Both children were turned over to her ex-husband Kevin Federline for custody, and she was in fact taken to a local hospital for medical treatment."
Early police reports said officers thought Spears might have been under the influence of some substance but Aguirre said there was no evidence of that.So was this whole event blown out of proportion? Clearly. Has Britney’s chances at seeing her kids again increased? Unfortunately. Will the SWAT team be called in next time? God, I hope so. I want Britney to get hit with one of those beanbag guns. Mostly to see if she thinks it’s a burrito and tries to eat it. UPDATE: The AP reports that Commissioner Scott Gordon granted Kevin Federline sole legal and physical custody of the children and Britney Spears visitation rights are suspended.
"Our understanding is that was not the case," she said.
Officers at the scene determined that paramedics "needed to be called" but it was unclear why, she said.
"We're not aware of any type of injuries that she sustained" and she was not combative with authorities, Aguirre said.
Spears wasn't arrested in connection with the custody dispute, Aguirre said.
"There was no actual crime that was involved," the police spokeswoman said.
Britney Loses Visitation Rights
Friday, January 4th, 2008
Britney Spears lost her child-visitation rights Friday following her 72-hour lockdown for a mental evaluation.
Kevin Federline is “awarded sole legal custody and sole physical custody of the minor children,” court Commissioner Scott Gordon said in a written ruling after an emergency hearing.
Gordon said Spears’s “visitation with the minor children is suspended pending further order of the court.”
The order is in effect until Jan. 14.
After the 40-minute hearing, Federline’s attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said: “There are no winners here.”
He said he was “not happy about any of the events that have happened.”
Police responded to Spears’s house on Thursday night after she refused to turn over the boys to Federline’s bodyguard after a visitation day. Kaplan arrived at the house “to bring a document … that identified the existing court order” about custody, he earlier told the Associated Press.
“I was up at the guard gate where (she) lives,” he told AP. “I did not go in” to the home.
On Friday, Kaplan and Spears’s attorney met privately with the judge in his chambers, then returned in the afternoon for a closed hearing.
Spears, meanwhile, is not facing any criminal charges – for now.
“The LAPD is not planning to file any charges against Ms. Spears at this time,” Officer April Harding says. “The investigation is ongoing.”
