‘Where The Wild Things Are:’ Is Spike Jonze’s Adaptation Doomed?

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

There has been an alarmed buzz building across the Internet this week and it is centered around a little boy in a wolf suit.

Spike Jonze's adaptation of Maurice Sendak's beloved Where the Wild Things Are has been shrouded in secrecy for a year. Everyone has seemed content to leave it that way because, frankly, it seemed to be a sure thing. A classic book, an edgy, young director and a script penned by the brilliant Dave Eggers -- it seems like the recipe for an instant and intelligent classic.

Or not. Footage of Max frolicking with the monsters surfaced this week (and was just as quickly yanked on many sites, including our own, by Warner Bros) to a decidedly mixed reaction from fans. While it was hailed as being accurate, "tone wise," by Ain't It Cool News' Moriarty, Jonze quickly did damage control. In an e-mail from Warners to several outlets, Jonze dismissed the footage as a "clip [that] doesn't look or feel anything like the movie." If the test footage is nothing like the film, which film did Moriarty see? And why does it match this poster a spy snapped at a convention back in June 2007?

Jamie Spears must watch Supernanny

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008
Thumbnail image for 0214_britney_spears_leather_00.jpg Britney's dad Jamie Spears is apparently running a tight ship. OK! Magazine reports Britney is kept on a regimented schedule which makes sense. Children crave structure and discipline which Jamie Spears is dishing out like Bruce Lee if he ran a day care for 26-years-old. I rock at metaphors:
Britney's father is not allowing her to drink alcohol, see her friends and insists that she prays in her pajamas every night. Jamie has also been encouraging his daughter to teach childrens' classes at her favorite hangout, Millennium Dance Complex.
But Britney's fighting back and plotting a return to her care-free days of acting like a batshit moron in public:
So far, Britney has been compliant with her dad's rules, but sources tell OK! that the singer is in the midst of plotting her revenge. Britney has been sending secret text messages to her former party pal and cousin Alli Sims and is reportedly working with her and Sam Lutfi to try to oust her father as her conservator.
I guess Britney Spears is getting tired of having to take a bath before bed every night. But she's got her dad fooled. She just locks the doors, runs some water and plays with her Barbies on the floor. Ha ha. Suckers.

Milo: Romance Talk with Hayden ‘Makes Me Smile’

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

miloMilo Ventimiglia has remained pretty tight-lipped about his relationship with Heroes costar Hayden Panettiere – but in the new issue of GQ the actor says it doesn’t bother him when people gossip about his romantic life.

“You know what, man – it makes me smile,” Ventimiglia tells GQ, when told by the reporter that bloggers have nicknamed the couple “Halo.”

Smiles aside, the actor still maintains he wants to keep a lid on his private life. “When you’re in the public eye, you try to keep whatever you can private,” he says. “People can speculate and talk. But what can you do – stop living your life?”

Jessica Simpson Rules the Box Office in Ukraine

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

jessica simpsonIs Jessica Simpson the David Hasselhoff of Ukraine?

The blond starlet seems to be the toast of the Eastern European nation. Her latest film, Blonde Ambition, hit No. 1 in Ukraine, grossing $253,008 for the weekend of Feb. 14-17, Box Office Mojo reports.

It’s a huge reversal of fortune for the film, which bombed back home. In December, Blonde Ambition had a run in eight Texas theaters, grossing just $1,771 in its opening weekend.

How to explain the comedy’s success abroad? One word: escapism.

“The former Soviet nations have a sweet tooth for straight-up comedies,” Conor Bresnan, editor in chief of Box Office Mojo International, said. “When these comedies have big name celebrities like Jessica Simpson’s, that’s all that’s needed to sell the movie. Russian and Ukrainian audiences have an even bigger urge for escapism than Americans. So, films like Blonde Ambition will gross more than No Country for Old Men.

And this may only be the beginning for Blonde Ambition. Next stop: Bulgaria.

Pink: Divorce ‘Not About Cheating, Anger or Fighting’

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

pinkThanking her fans for their support, Pink said her divorce is “not about cheating, anger or fighting” and that she still considers her ex a “good man.”

“I wanted to reach out personally to all my fans/friends out there in the world,” the pop singer writes on her Web site.

Pink, 28, and her husband, motocross racer and former The Surreal Life star Carey Hart, 32, are dissolving their union after two years.

“First and foremost, thank you for all of your support and love, it means a lot to me right now,” Pink writes. “The most important thing for you all to know is that Carey and I love each other so so much.”

As for the reasons behind the split, she says, “This breakup is not about cheating, anger or fighting. I know it sounds like cliché bulls—, but we are best friends, and we will continue to be.

“All I know at this point, is that I want to make the best album I can, and Carey wants to do the best possible job he can with everything he has going on. He is a good man, so please support him as well.”

Looking ahead, she says, “One never knows the future, but mine and Carey’s just might involve beach babies and sunshine one day. Just not right now. Thanks for the concern and caring.”

She signs off with, “X Miss P.”

Jennifer Lopez might be birthing aliens soon

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Jennifer Lopez could be delivering the spawn of Marc Anthony today. Page Six is reporting the singer/actress checked into her lush suite at North Shore University Hospital and the J-Uterus is ready for blast off:
Monday, we reported the room, which is furnished with a leather couch, had "been sitting empty for two weeks" in preparation for the pop diva's twins. But a recent patient at the hospital told Page Six that during her visit, staffers were aflutter, exclaiming, "J.Lo is here!"
Meanwhile, Marc Anthony climbed into his spaceship and prepared for his flight home to the Salsa nebula. His work here is complete. Now if he can just get Tom Cruise off the windshield: "Dammit, man, you can't come with me. This thing only seats one and, for the last time, you're not sitting on my lap. We tried it once and you kept doing that weird smile."

Hokusai An Animated Sketchbook

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

This award winning short film was written, directed, and animated by Tony White all the way back in 1978. The film brings to life the worlds of Japanese master painter, Katsushika Hokusai (1760—1849).

Best known for his iconic, The Great Wave, but his other paintings of Edo period Japan are equally as amazing (he left around 30,000 works at his time of death)!

His work is so influential, you can still see it influencing todays artists (kozynday / sony bravia bunny wave?). He was also an early pioneer of anime / cartoon porn (might not strictly be true :)), check out Dream of a Fishermans Wife!

DVD Review: Terror of Mechagodzilla

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

A lost Godzilla classic finally gets a proper release in the US.
A last gasp for the original Showa Godzilla series, the majority of the original team reunites for this final attempt to salvage a franchise that immeasurably went downhill. While Terror of Mechagodzilla still carries some of the carelessness Godzilla films had become known for, with only a month to complete the entire thing, director Ishiro Honda…
