Review – Juno (2007)

Friday, February 8th, 2008

by Dave Corkery

There’s not too many behind the scenes stories that could themselves be made into a movie. But the ‘overnight success’ of Juno’s first time screenwriter Diablo Cody is as good a yarn as any. Scooped from her popular blog, ‘The Pussie Ranch,’ which followed her exploits as a stripper (you couldn’t make this stuff up), Cody was approached by producer Mason Novick to see if she had any screenplays floating around. Responding as most blogger/strippers probably would, she laughed and dismissed it. But Novack insisted, with a most serious face, that he was indeed interested and so, Juno was born (no pun intended)

Juno is the tale of a teenage girl (Ellen Page) who discovers a bun in her proverbial oven after a one-night stand with her geeky best friend Bleeker (Michael Cera). Deciding that abortion is not for her, she seeks out a couple suitable to adopt her soon to be newborn. And so she comes across an ad in the Penny Saver for seemingly perfect, upper middle-class couple Vanessa and Mark Loring (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman.)

Ty’s movie picks, Friday Feb. 8

caramel-1.jpg

Some interesting smallish movies in town this weekend: "Caramel" is a sort of Beirut "Beauty Shop," "In Bruges" an uneven but well played tragifarce about British hoodlums (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, both excellent) adrift in Belgium. They're the feature film debuts of, respectively, Lebanese actress/writer/music-vid director Nadine Labaki and Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, both of whom we'll assuredly be hearing more. TMI: Labaki (in photo above) is my new movie crush.

I haven't seen "Taxi to the Dark Side," about the US use of torture in the War against Terrorism, but Wesley likes it even better than "No End in Sight." Cowboy up and check it out; you know you don't want to but you also know you have to, especially when stories like this one are in today's paper.

In a minor miracle of film distribution, Paris Hilton's new movie, "The Hottie and the Nottie," opens in the Boston area today only in Revere. Unfortunately, "Fool's Gold," a classic February dog starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, is opening everywhere.

At the art-houses and institutes: Tonight (Friday), the Harvard Film Archive is welcoming back Cecilia Miniucchi, an alum and distingushed documentarian whose narrative debut, "Expired" stars Samantha Morton and Jason Patric. Saturday and Sunday the HFA hosts Spanish director Jose Luis Guerin and shows a sampling of his luminous, mysterious work about the spaces between people and the world.

The African Film Festival continues at the MFA, and there's a free screening tonight of "The Gates," a documentary about the artist Christo's brilliant assault on New York's Central Park.

Classic romances at the Brattle until Valentine's Day. Tonight is "Harold and Maude," all you suicidal lovebirds.

The Nines drinking game

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Saw a link to this in the comments section at IMDb.

1 drink – every time someone drinks
1 drink – every time someone says “Nine”
1 drink – every time you see the number nine or can make the number nine from something on screen
1 drink – every time you see a pug dog or a picture of one
1 drink – every time you see the main character’s green friendship bracelet

Note: I don’t actually recommend this, because you’ll probably get alcohol poisoning.

Amy Winehouse Offered Bond Theme, Source Says

Friday, February 8th, 2008

British jazz singer Amy Winehouse, who is known internationally more for her drug problems and wild antics -- in my five seconds of research, I see that she apparently heckled Bono while he was giving a speech, which makes me think she's good people -- has reportedly been offered the chance to sing the theme song for the new James Bond film. If British rag The Sun is to be believed, the producers of Quantum of Solace have gotten themselves involved in Winehouse's personal drama by offering the singer the theme song on the condition that she get herself clean and sober by April. "That's when the Bond people make a final decision on who sings the theme," the source said. "If Amy is clean then, it's hers." I don't know who this source is -- craft services guy, maybe -- but I also wouldn't put it past the crafty Bond producers to try to stir the media into a frenzy by putting Winehouse on the payroll in such a manner. For his part, Daniel Craig has already commented on this whole drama, saying "It's just way, way off that. Everyone's speculating about it but we've got other things to deal with -- there's no point in writing the song for a movie when we haven't got a movie." Yikes.

In other Bond news, there isn't any, really, but Craig did get into another tiff with journalists over his reputation for being difficult when it comes to press, which I didn't know he had. I met Craig during the junket for Casino Royale and found him to be as warm and as forthcoming as you could expect. On that so-called reputation, Craig says "I don't think it's true, it's just lazy journalism; they want to paint me as someone difficult. I think I'm quite nice, but maybe I'm delusional. There's no point in doing Bond if you're not going to sell it."

Lawyers Meet for Britney Spears Hearing

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Britney SpearsAttorneys for Britney Spears and her father attended a closed-door emergency hearing Thursday, a day after the singer’s early release from a psychiatric hospital.

The attorneys met before Commissioner Reva Goetz, who recently extended temporary control of Spears’s affairs to her father Jamie and a lawyer. The session lasted about a half hour, and the lawyers left without commenting.

Apearing in Goetz’s downtown L.A. court were Jeryll S. Cohen and Vivian Thoreen, who represent Jamie; Samuel Ingham, a court-appointed lawyer for Britney; and Andrew Wallet who, along with Jamie, is co-temporary conservator of the pop star’s estate.

Adam Streisand, an attorney (and relative of Barbra Streisand) who had once claimed to represent Spears – and who met with her Wednesday night – was not there; his firm announced he was off the case.

Heidi Fleiss Arrested on Drug Charges

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Heidi FleissFormer Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss was arrested in Nevada on Thursday for investigation of driving under the influence and possessing drugs without a prescription.

Fleiss, 42, was released on $1,300 bail following her morning arrest near her home in Pahrump, police say.

Nye County, Nev., deputies responded to a DUI call and contacted the onetime madam – who now runs a laundry – at 9:23 a.m.

“During the investigation she was found to have prescription narcotics on her person, not in a prescription bottle, and could produce no evidence that the prescription pain medication had been prescribed to her,” police said in a press release. “She was arrested and transported to [jail].”

A male passenger in her car, identified as John Owen, 53, was also arrested for possession of marijuana and being under the influence.

Relations ‘Civilized’ with Britney, Parents & Adnan Ghalib

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Brit and AdnanAfter getting out of the hospital, Britney Spears spent her first night at home with her mom, dad and paparazzo pal Adnan Ghalib. But how did everyone get along?

“From what I was told, everything was very civilized,” a source close to the photographersaid.

After Spears’s unexpected release from UCLA Medical Center on Wednesday, “Britney called Adnan to meet her at the Beverly Hills Hotel. He had been talking with Lynne and Jamie for the past few days,” says the source.

Spears and Ghalib had a brief meeting with lawyer Adam Streisand, who announced Thursday that he is off the case. The pair then met up with mom Lynne and dad Jamie.

Ghalib also confirmed in a posting on his photo agency’s Web site that he “has been in contact with her parents.”

“As the day unraveled, they have all agreed to get Britney safely back to her home so she can get the medical care and love that she deserves,” says the posting on the FinalPixx site. “After spending most of the evening with The Spears [family] at The Summit, Adnan left and went back home at 2:30 a.m…. to give the family some alone time.”

Lynne Spears left her daughter’s home just after midnight Thursday , while dad Jamie remained there through Thursday morning.
