George Carlin dies at 71

Monday, June 23rd, 2008
0623_george_carlin_rip_00.JPG Sad news this morning. It's been reported that legendary comedian and cantankerous badass George Carlin passed away yesterday at the age of 71, according to People:
The stand-up comic and author – best known for his groundbreaking routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" – reportedly died of heart failure at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica. (Carlin, who was open about his long struggle with drugs and alcohol, had a history of heart problems, including a previous heart attack.)
George Carlin was always awesome to me because he had a hilarious way of seeing through the everyday bullshit. The world just got a whole lot less funny and a little less brutally honest. Rest in Peace, George. You'll be missed.

MTV Video Music Awards Shift to Hollywood

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

The Moon ManThe MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from Tinseltown this year, returning to Los Angeles for the first time in a decade.

“With Paramount Pictures as the ideal setting, the glamour and musical heritage of L.A. are sure to be catalysts for creating explosive pop culture moments that the VMAs are known for,” Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group, said in a statement.

The 25th-anniversary VMA show will take place Sept. 7 at Paramount Pictures Studio lot in Los Angeles, MTV said Monday. For the first time, the MTV audience will help select the nominees.

Last year, the event took place at Vegas’s Palms Casino Resort – where Britney Spears’s career officially imploded after a disastrous comeback number, Kanye West angrily swore never to work with MTV again because he didn’t win any awards (he later retracted the claim), and Kid Rock and Tommy Lee raised fisticuffs against one another over mutual ex Pamela Anderson.

No telling what this year might bring.

Britney Spears missed by the paps, perhaps a little too much

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

After flying to Kentwood for the birth of Jamie Lynn's baby, Britney Spears returned home Friday and was completely bombarded by the paparazzi at LAX. The situation escalated when one of Britney's entourage start throwing punches with a pap, according to Us Magazine:
"Britney's security was not equipped to handle the situation," an eyewitness told Usmagazine.com. "It was mass chaos with photographers standing on the escalator with Britney and she literally had nowhere to go. Her bodyguards had no idea what to do."
Even Britney Spears, of all people, was surprised by the onslaught of paparazzi. So, judging by her face, there was really that many of them, or someone unwrapped a McRib within earshot.

Cynthia Nixon Hopes to Tie the Knot

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Cynthia NixonSex and the City star Cynthia Nixon appears ready to walk down the aisle with her longtime partner Christine Marinoni.

But don’t expect the couple to fly out to California where gay marriages were recently legalized.

“In an ideal world, we’d like to in New York, when it becomes legalized,” Nixon, 42, told New York’s Daily News.

“Hopefully, it won’t take 20 years,” Nixon added.

Nixon and Marinoni, 41, an education activist, began dating after the actress split from companion Danny Mozes in June 2003. Mozes and Nixon have two children: a daughter, Samantha, and son, Charles.

Minnie Driver Enjoys Casual Baby Shower

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Minnie DriverMinnie Driver and about 40 guests gathered Saturday at a friend’s home in Malibu for a baby shower.

The house was decorated with pink and white peonies, and it was a casual affair, with guests sipping basil lemonade and eating finger sandwiches and berry cake from Sweet Lady Jane.

“Minnie loves the cake,” says a pal.

Driver opened Gymboree Brand New gifts, while guests hand-painted onesies for the baby and signed personal notes in a book to be given to the mom-to-be.

“It was a beautiful day,” a guest says.

The British-born Driver, 38, has decided not to find out the sex of the baby. She has said little about the father, except that’s he’s English, “sort of in the same business,” and that they have no plans to marry.

Willow Smith – Like Father, Like Daughter

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Jada Smith and FamilyPreparing for a film role can be daunting, but as the daughter of Will Smith, Willow Smith didn’t have to go far for acting advice.

“My dad gives me tips,” Willow said last week at the New York City premiere of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, in which she costars. “He says listen to the director and feel the moment.” And did she feel the moment? “Yes, I did.”

Willow, who hit the red carpet with her mom Jada Pinkett Smith and brother Jaden, also enlisted her family to assist in the wardrobe department.

“My mom helped and the stylist helped,” said the 7-year-old actress of her premiere attire: a sequined shirt, Capri pants, Tory Burch shoes and strands of green and red woven into her braids.

As for her Kit Kittredge attire, “I didn’t have a lot of makeup,” said Willow. “Basically, for me it’s just clothes, clothes, clothes, shoes.”

The child actress, who also appeared in her dad’s film I Am Legend, enjoyed tapping into her creative side on screen.

“It’s really fun,” says Willow of acting. “Because on the set, the directors tell you something and you can do it a whole different way. And they will still like it.”

And with dad Will starring in the film Hancock on July 2, the same day Kit Kittredge opens, which Smith does Willow think will do better at the box office? One word: “Me.”
