Filed under: Documentary, Foreign Language, Independent, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Politics, CineVegas There's no way around it: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson owes at least some of his fame to the way his dominating figure fits the blockbuster action stereotype with near-mechanical sleekness. However, he also offers an alternative to that reductive perspective. Looking sharp in a business suit and speaking with the relaxed professional discipline of a CEO, Johnson showed up at a screening of Get Smart on Sunday at the CineVegas Film Festival displaying sheer confidence. The screening took place at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, where Johnson had recently acted in Race to Witch Mountain ("We just added to the chaos," he said), but on this visit, Johnson got a chance to remind people that he's not just a one-note performer, but someone who plays an active role in the international film community (not to mention the health community, since The Rock Foundation pushes obesity prevention). Outside of his supremely meta performance in Richard Kelly's Southland Tales, Johnson has made his interests in adventurous cinema increasingly clear, and boldly champions independent artists. You can get a small glimpse of this aspect of his personality in Operation Filmmaker, documentarian Nina Davenport's account of an Iraqi filmmaker named Muthana Mohmed whose aspirations tragically fall short of the expectations surrounding him. Landing the opportunity to work for Liev Schreiber on the set of Everything is Illuminated, the 25-year-old Mohmed grows increasingly frustrated with the boring tasks given to him, and continually blows opportunities as a result of his unbalanced work ethic. What exactly does your moviegoing sensibility owe to Stan Winston? The special effects pioneer died Sunday at 62 following a long battle with multiple myeloma cancer, but he has left a deep imprint in our collective cranium. There are nice encomiums from Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and many others at Wired, EW, the Associated Press, and the L.A. Times, but maybe the best to way to memorialize this casual, hardworking craftsman is to post photos of some of his work. Yeah, he's responsible for all of the following. A full filmography is at IMDb or at Winston's own site.

July is the first issue of Numero Korea. The cover is Kate Moss and is a reprint of Numero France 59. Needless to say, fashion fans wished they had shot an original cover, maybe with the lovely Daul Kim pictured below. (Elite New York)

The producers for Lindsay Lohan's new movie Labor Pains are saying "so far, so good" on her behavior. Or at least the film's publicists are saying that because, for all we know, Lindsay could be lighting the crews' cigarettes with her vagina. (You heard it here first.) People reports:
"We were a little bit reluctant to work with her," Lati Grobman, one of the producers, tells PEOPLE. "But she's been amazing."
"The difference between her and the other girls that are naughty in the business is that she's actually talented. It's not [like] Paris Hilton and the rest of them. We took the chance. It's good that we did. So far, so good."
Though the producers wish Lindsay would quit one annoying little habit: Acting like a lesbian. She's not fooling anyone. Especially after having sex with all the teamsters, and a homeless man who wandered too close to set. Poor bastard just wanted some scraps from the snack table. Let's just say he bit off more than he could chew... I'm actually serious. He had half a Cornish hen in his mouth before Lindsay tackled him.

There’s no doubt that meeting Angelina Jolie can be nerve-wracking – but her Wanted costars say the superstar mom is incredibly down-to-earth.
“It’s a little intimidating, someone like her who is presented as a goddess. [But] it takes, like, 30 seconds and you figure out she’s just a cool woman,” Wanted actor Thomas Kretschmann said at the film’s press day Monday.
The German actor, who plays an assassin in the action flick out June 27, also described Jolie as “a cool mommy.”
Kretschmann’s kids and the Jolie-Pitt youngsters “played together from time to time” on set, he said. “She knows exactly what she wants and she’s extremely smart.”
But Jolie isn’t the only “cool” person in her household. Costar Common calls Brad Pitt “a good dude.”
“We hung out and he was a cool cat,” said the rapper-turned-actor.
And Jolie? “She’s an incredible mother, a beautiful mother,” Common said. “She has so much realness to her.”

Billy Ray Cyrus should be interviewed all day every day. The country star and father of Miley Cyrus (better known as Hannah Montana) stopped by The Today Show this morning to talk about the scandal involving a topless photo of Miley that appeared in Vanity Fair. Check out these awesome answers that run the hilarious gamut of poop and turkey necks:
On why he stayed quiet about Miley's photos:
"My dad always told me the more you stomp in poop, the more it stinks."
On the advice Kris Kristofferson gave him:
"And I remember Kris Kristofferson stopped me backstage at one of my shows and said, ‘Listen, hoss, always remember: The turkey with the longest neck’s always going to be the one everyone’s shootin’ at’.”
On the supposedly suggestive father-daughter photo:
"That’s just a daddy who loves his daughter a whole lot. If a daddy hasn’t hugged his daughter recently, I recommend he does.”
On his excuse for leaving the shoot early and not seeing the topless photo:
"I had a show to do, and an obligation, to go to Washington state ... playing for the troops just back from Iraq."
Billy Ray also added: "Yeah, the troops... and a group of scientists who needed me to play my gee-tar to cure cancer. Yeah. Dang gum diddily, I reckon all that stuff." Wait a minute, he done served us a cowpie!

PETA has taken umbrage with Jessica Simpson's T-shirt proclaiming "Real Girls Love Meat." They decided to seek the moral high ground and respond with a list of five reasons "Why only stupid girls brag about eating meat." Sciencey! Here's my personal favorite gem:
4. Meat will make you fat. All the saturated fat and cholesterol in chicken wings, pork chops, and steak eventually leads to flabby thighs and love handles. I hope the upcoming "Jessica Simpson's Intimates" line comes in plus sizes! Going vegetarian is the best way to get slim and stay that way.
Jesus! "Eating meat will make you fat." How superficial. (Ha ha! The name of this site.) But, seriously, PETA left out these other pitfalls of being a carnivore that warrant your attention. What can I say? I'm a helper:
1. Meat will cause the Lifetime channel to go off the air. Or, at the very least, cancel Army Wives.
2. Feeding your husband meat will lead him straight into the arms of another woman. Who's totally that chick at your work who you'd be friends with if only she didn't have the same purse. Bitch.
3. AIDS: It's what for dinner - if you eat meat.

Britney Spears filmed a cameo for the new Pussycat Dolls video "When I Grow Up," but her part was quietly axed before the debut over the weekend. To be honest, I'm not really sure why Britney was included in the first place. The video showcases the Dolls' peak physical fitness, proficient choreography and ability to respond to verbal interaction. So basically everything that Britney Spears is not. Unless choreography is code for "I love Wendy's Baconator."

Keeping heroically fit doesn’t come easily to Ali Larter – despite some noticeable physical advantages.
“When I’m in really good shape, I like my butt. It’s juicy – that’s what my fiancé says,” the Heroes actress, 32, referring to actor Hayes MacArthur, tells Allure for its July issue.
“I’m an indulger, but then I have to be good,” Larter says over a large lunch of dumplings, scallops with ravioli and a burger with salad, fries, ketchup and mayo. “I’m also going to get my butt out and go for a run tomorrow.”
Once, before a photo shoot, her thighs needed to be duct-taped on account of “they were a little too round,” she recalls. On another occasion, while on a movie, she packed on some pounds – and that’s when being unfit really hit the fan.
“The faxes went out from the producers and the director to my agents to my manager to call me and ask me to lose weight,” she says. “I just remember sitting in my trailer hysterically crying from the embarrassment I felt about myself, my body – and that no one could talk to me directly.”
But she realizes that it was nothing personal – only business. “This is what I signed up for,” she admits. “What I do for a living puts me in the spotlight. They pay me for it.”
