Celyn for Ben & Jerry’s

Nexus Productions director Celyn has created this enchanting 30 second TVC for Ben & Jerry’s through Paris based agency, Leg. Production time was around 5 weeks and the creative was very much a collaboration between Celyn and the agency. Leg came to Celyn with an initial storyboard and animatic, which he developed further. He then set about character design in his inimitable fashion before beginning production.

Celyn was very hands-on during the production process, animating elements such as the van, photographers and crowd. He and his small team have succeeded in creating a charming spot which, in the final shot, superbly manages to depict crowd chaos without seeming messy or cluttered. I put this down to a really clever use of colour palette and composition. I particularly like the two chefs running with their massive spoon. There’s something very Python-esque about the way they hop.

New trends in the industry?

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Edit: it seamed that I did not express my self clearly about what I found to be the interesting aspect of the post regarding Prime Focus London and have therefore chosen to rewrite the post. My apologizes for not being too clear. But be easy on me. I am new. :-)

Lately I have found the ongoing debate regarding harder pressure from client throughout the industry a interesting topic. It seems that there are some collaborations and merges that have taken place in order for the studios / post houses to deal with the pressure and demands from clients.

One of the most interesting cases I have noticed is the international creative network of creative professionals in the broadcast industry. Unitedsenses is a global network including broadcast agencies and studio from around the world, letting otherwise unknown territory be touched by studios who might not be able to reach it.

Another good example is the latest merge between Clear, The Hive and VTR, which now is known as Prime Focus London. By joining forces, they will be able to deal with higher client demands. Also with a new business model they are capable of outsourcing creative and technical work to it’s award-winning parent company in India. Read the full article about the merge at VFXtalk.

Will this new structure then affect the smaller studios and studios with less financial flexibility to take a beating?

On Stage

Friday, July 13th, 2007

Just to follow in the footsteps of the recent Diesel show post, I thought it could be interesting to see where motion design and stage show merge at it’s finest.

Two of the best-known (for me at lest) examples are UK-based LED-loving super stars United Visual Artists, with shows created for V&A, Massive Attack, OneDotZero etc.

The other is LA-based Veneno, with roots in the traditions of dance choreography and music videos. Both deliver high quality stage visuals, and I can only imagine what a thrill it must be to see a show when it’s this well conducted on the visual side.
