Thursday, February 21st, 2008Best Picture marathon — Are you man enough?
Thursday, February 21st, 2008So you still haven't seen "There Will Be Blood" or "Atonement" and you have to fill out your office Oscar ballot. If the filing deadline is Sunday, you're in luck: AMC Theatres is hosting a nationwide Best Picture nominee marathon on Saturday, starting with "Michael Clayton" at 11 in the morning and ending 12 hours and 25 minutes later with the closing credits of "No Country for Old Men." (Presumably "Juno" will be showing early enough for the pregnant-teenager crowd.)
The catch is that in the Boston area you have to go to Methuen or Framingham. Because, you know, those Boston Common playdates of Larry the Cable Guy's "Witless Protection" are just too precious to lose. Still, $30 gets you all five movies ($6 a pop, a steal) and there are free popcorn refills all day long. You might want to sneak in some carbs, though, and maybe some Zoloft -- this is one seriously depressing bunch of movies.

Thursday, February 21st, 2008The Dirty Truth About ‘Fanboys’

Here's the Fanboys synopsis currently up on IMDb: "Star Wars" fans travel to Skywalker Ranch to steal an early copy of "Episode I: The Phantom Menace" for their dying friend."
Problem is, that's not the movie everyone will see when it eventually hits theaters. There's been a ton of talk surrounding the Fanboy re-cuts; how the cancer storyline was taken out, how Kyle Newman was replaced as director, and how the Weinsteins have pretty much turned Fanboys into a completely different film from what was originally intended. Yesterday, fans wrote into AICN claiming to have donated props for the film, and were upset over all these changes. So upset they were starting a campaign against The Weinstein Co., hoping to get Newman's original cut released instead of this new one.
Thanks to a well-placed, super delegate secret spy source, Cinematical was able to get the real skinny on what was going on with Fanboys. Some of this info is new, some old, but I have confirmed all of it to be true. First off, Kyle Newman definitely was replaced as director for the re-shoots by Steve Brill (Without a Paddle). The "dying of cancer" storyline was completely dumped, and, instead, the fanboys are now trying to sneak a copy of Phantom Menace simply because they're fans and want to see it. According to my source, the story is now "disjointed, nonsensical and lacking any heart."
Oh, there's more ...

The firestorm sparked by Lindsay Lohan's decision to pose naked for a photo spread in New York Magazine is fascinating. The comments in response to Erik Davis' post were mostly negative, either disparaging Lohan's looks or her reputation as a "bad girl." I'm sure her age (21) also affected how people felt about the pictures and her exposure in them. Would the reaction have been the same if she had appeared naked in I Know Who Killed Me, in which she played a stripper who kept most of her clothes on?We'll never know, but we do know that not every actress who doffs her duds provokes such a heated reaction. And, sometimes, it's not even the actress' body parts on display. For example, initial reports were that Cate Blanchett appeared nude in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, but that proved to be false. The actress didn't feel the nudity was required, and so a "bum double" was called in. None of the other women nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category appear naked in their nominated films, though three of them have done so in the past. In the Best Supporting Actress category, we find only Tilda Swinton has bared all before. Therefore, we'll cheat a little and add screenwriter Diablo Cody, who worked as a professional unclad dancer for a brief period in her life.
We've listed four nominated actresses and a nominated writer, all good women of distinguished accomplishment who, at one time or another, have appeared naked in public, all but one on the big screen. Who's Your Favorite Good Girl Gone Nude? And don't worry, the boys get their turn tomorrow.

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008‘Where The Wild Things Are:’ Is Spike Jonze’s Adaptation Doomed?
Wednesday, February 20th, 2008Filed under: Classics, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Warner Brothers, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Family Films
There has been an alarmed buzz building across the Internet this week and it is centered around a little boy in a wolf suit. Spike Jonze's adaptation of Maurice Sendak's beloved Where the Wild Things Are has been shrouded in secrecy for a year. Everyone has seemed content to leave it that way because, frankly, it seemed to be a sure thing. A classic book, an edgy, young director and a script penned by the brilliant Dave Eggers -- it seems like the recipe for an instant and intelligent classic.
Or not. Footage of Max frolicking with the monsters surfaced this week (and was just as quickly yanked on many sites, including our own, by Warner Bros) to a decidedly mixed reaction from fans. While it was hailed as being accurate, "tone wise," by Ain't It Cool News' Moriarty, Jonze quickly did damage control. In an e-mail from Warners to several outlets, Jonze dismissed the footage as a "clip [that] doesn't look or feel anything like the movie." If the test footage is nothing like the film, which film did Moriarty see? And why does it match this poster a spy snapped at a convention back in June 2007?
