Back in April, when Adobe and Cut&Paste announced the winners of the See What’s Possible Challenge, one entry really stood out to me. "The Experiment" was created by a mysterious group called The Action Cats, who I later learned were actually an in-house group of designers and animators at ad agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.
That piqued my curiosity. An agency made this?! So I called them up and we chatted for almost an hour.

Okay, remember when Amy Winehouse's dad Mitch said she has emphysema and was going to die? Well, he might have embellished things a bit. Turns out Amy has "low level signs" of the disease. But it's technically not emphysema and the damage is reversible - if she quits smoking. So, perhaps Mitch was getting a preemptive jump on when she'll have it. My money's on July. Anyway, here's what he told BBC Radio:
"Amy really hasn't got emphysema, there's traces of emphysema. Obviously, if she doesn't quit smoking, it's going to get worse, like everyone else ... with patience her lungs will recover completely."
So essentially, Amy has the same predisposition to emphysema as any other smoker. Real smooth, Mitch. Way to cry wolf on that one. Now nobody's going to believe you when Amy gets so freaking high next week, she travels through a wormhole to become the queen of Reverse Earth and collapses the entire space/time continuum. Oh, that's great, Mitch. Just great. Call me old-fashioned, but I'm sort of attached to, oh I dunno, EXISTING. Goddammit, I knew that beehive was no good. I could tell by the way it's always looking at me no matter where I'm standing...

Poison drummer Ricki Rockett was exonerated of charges that he raped a woman in Mississippi after it was determined he was never even in the state at the time of the alleged rape. So, like any classy gent, Rikki is throwing an Exoneration Party and Ride. Though in all fairness, the event will benefit the non-profit group Centurion Ministries which helps vindicate people charged with crimes they didn't commit. Hmm, interesting. I wonder if they cover paternity suits. I mean, DNA might say I'm the father, but that don't prove nothin'.

In THE HAPPENING, M. Night Shyamalan serves up over-the-top, apocalyptic strangeness. The film opens onto New York City\'s Central Park with a crowd of people enjoying an idyllic summer day. The carefree scene soon takes a terrifying turn, when out of nowhere, hordes of people begin to commit suicide en masse. People scramble to make sense of the pandemonium, and many believe it is a terrorist attack. It appears that some sort of deadly toxin is being released into the air. Cut to Elliot (Mark Wahlberg) a science teacher in Philadelphia. When he learns of the attack on New York, he meets up with his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel), his friend Julian (John Leguizamo), and Julians\'s daughter, Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez). They make plans to get out of the city via train, but the train is evacuated in the middle of a small Pennsylvania town. When they learn that the mysterious toxin is spreading its way across the Northeast, they break up into groups, with Elliot, Alma, and Jess running through open farmland in search of safety. They are unsure of where to hide, or what exactly they are hiding from, until Elliot slowly forms a theory about the threat. He fights to keep Alma and Jess free from harm, and the film builds to a bizarre, unsettling climax, with Shyamalan\'s usual surprise ending.

Shyamalan\'s premise of escaping an unknown, unexplainable attack is a timely one, and is quite chilling in concept. However, while he at times appears to be groping for the frenzied scariness of THE BIRDS, THE HAPPENING\'s outlandish death scenes and implausible plot line often veer closer to B-movie classics. The film doesn\'t match the clever creepiness of THE SIXTH SENSE, but for fans of campy horror à la THE EVIL DEAD, it is truly something to behold.
