Kaufman detailed the cash flow problems at THINKfilm, which were causing acrimony between the distrib and many of its filmmakers, who were alleging that the distributor hadn't paid what it owed to them, as well as to advertising companies charged with marketing films under THINKfilm's banner.
Now indieWIRE has a follow-up piece up by Eugene Hernandez, which says that director/producer Alex Gibney, whose film Taxi to the Darkside won the best documentary Oscar this year and was supposed to receive a major theatrical push by THINKfilm following its win, is seeking more than $1 million in damages from the ailing distributor.
While THINKfilm did pay the film's producers the minimums guaranteed by their contract on May 5, Gibney's complaint alleges that THINKfilm failed to disclose that it did not have the financial resources to support the film's theatrical push following its Oscar win, and "jeopardized the success of the film by failing to abide by the terms of contracts it entered into with public relations firms and advisers and failed to pay such firms for work done and expenses incurred."

These are the latest round of pics from Katherine Heigl's Mexican getaway which ended over the weekend. She's relaxing in the sun and downing margaritas with her husband Josh Kelley. A man who's thinking to himself "How many times can a woman stretch without a boob popping out?" Many men have died trying to answer that question, Josh. But mostly because the strip club they were at caught on fire when I tried to light a shot of whiskey. Maybe the flamethrower was a tad excessive. We'll never know, so let's not point fingers or lawsuits.

In partnership with the Executive Producer of OFFF NY, I’m pleased to announce F5, a two-day festival of creativity taking place in New York City. Although the event won’t be until the spring of 2009, I want to put it on your radars now and encourage you to subscribe for updates on the F5 site. I’m not going to say anything more about the event right now, except that it’s going to be amazing. Larry Birkhead, like any widowed father, wants to make sure daughter Dannielynn has something to remember her mother Anna Nicole Smith by. Unfortunately, this sentiment involves buying two pieces of lingerie that Anna Nicole wore during a Playboy shoot. Did I mention one of them was ridiculously stained? Because it is. It's like you can see the memories. *sigh* The AP reports:
"I have a lot of history I have to put together that she doesn't really know about," Birkhead told The Associated Press. "Playboy was such a big part of Anna's career."
Birkhead bought a pink bustier for $1,800 and a white negligee for $1,000 at the auction, run by Julien's Auctions and held at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
A lot of people will say Dannielynn was doomed the day she was born to Anna Nicole. Or, depending on your religious beliefs, the day she was conceived by way of Jesus and a turkey baster. To each his own. But, as for me, I'm going to go ahead and say Dannielynn had a chance until the moment Larry Birkhead said "Oh my God, is that a stain? This is so going in your play room."

MDC stopped by Elise Crombez‘ intimate gathering this past week welcoming fellow Belgian artist/designer Tim van Steenbergen to New York. Tim’s installations of his sleek, beautiful designs seamlessly merged art with fashion. Elise on Tim:
MDC: So Elise, do you want to tell me why you support him and what you enjoy about his work?
Elise: Not only because he’s Belgian and I’m proud of Belgian people making it here, but also because his stuff has an edge and a personality. He doesn’t follow that safe play of “I’m going to make clothes but not really take a chance”. I think that that’s the most important thing, because if you stay true to what you really want to create then the first thing you care about is just being creative and the rest follows. I told Tim just have fun with what you do. People are attracted to it because they really want to be a part of that creativeness. They want to see something where they could go like, “Oh my god, could I actually wear this?” And when they wear his clothes, they’re like “It’s comfortable AND it’s something really special”. And he’s so young, and so talented and reserved yet down to earth. I think that’s what people out here love about Belgians and why I think those talented artists deserve to be recognized and be appreciated for their work, because they actually don’t take everything for granted. It’s nice to see that nowadays.”

Amy Winehouse, at the age of 24, is already showing early signs of emphysema, according to her father Mitch Winehouse. She's still in the hospital after collapsing last Monday and has been subjected to numerous tests. Mitch informed the Sunday Mirror that Amy's continued crack smoking will force her to require an oxygen mask or die - something I always thought impossible for the zombie kind:
"To think this could be my beautiful 24-year-old daughter's life is preposterous. But if drugs mean more to her than breathing properly, then so be it. But the doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her. It's been a tough week.
"After lots of tests they found a lump in Amy's chest. A scan has shown it's not cancerous and there are no traces of cancer in her blood. But they might need to double check."
Okay, finding out that Amy Winehouse has the lungs of an 80-year-old coal miner is no surprise. What is surprising is that she was only diagnosed with low levels of emphysema. Based on every image I've seen of Amy, I expected something insane that would baffle scientists like, I dunno, The Plague. Or Space Scurvy. No one ever suspects Space Scurvy.

Sad news this morning. It's been reported that legendary comedian and cantankerous badass George Carlin passed away yesterday at the age of 71, according to People:
The stand-up comic and author – best known for his groundbreaking routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" – reportedly died of heart failure at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica. (Carlin, who was open about his long struggle with drugs and alcohol, had a history of heart problems, including a previous heart attack.)
George Carlin was always awesome to me because he had a hilarious way of seeing through the everyday bullshit. The world just got a whole lot less funny and a little less brutally honest. Rest in Peace, George. You'll be missed.
