Heath Ledger may have died of natural causes

January 28th, 2008
0128_heath_ledger_natcauses_00.JPG In the latest round of speculation on Heath Ledger’s death, TMZ is reporting that sources connected to the case feel there’s a strong chance Heath died of natural causes and not accidental overdose:
The reason they think that -- it's now appearing that the level of toxicity (from medication) in Ledger's system was low enough that it may not have caused his death. These sources say Heath's heart stopped. It could have been a heart attack but it's not certain, at least not yet. Although it's bizarre that a 28-year-old could die of natural causes, it happens.
Pauly Shore presented his own conspiracy theory (video here) that it was the Olsen twins. Why someone would interview Pauly Shore is beyond me. I would’ve videotaped an ant carrying a potato chip instead. But only because I’m so dedicated to journalism. Also, I'm on the Pringles payroll. Hey, pec implants don't grow on trees. Yet...

Blu-ray Review: Underworld Evolution

January 28th, 2008

Equal to the original in terms of the movie and disc.
Like the original, this follow-up to the 2003 action/horror piece has almost no plot to back its intense, violent, and brutal action. The gore factor here is at least twice as high, and the hand to hand combat leads to some wild brawls. For sheer intense action, Underworld Evolution delivers, but the movie’s dark world feels like it offers…

  Romulus, My Father - Trailer
Based on Raimond Gaita’s critically acclaimed memoir. It tells the story of Romulus, his beautiful wife, Christina, and their struggle in the face of great adversity to bring up their son, Raimond. It is the tale of a boy trying to balance a universe described by his deeply moral father, against the experience of heartbreaking absence and neglect from a depressive mother. It is, ultimately, a story of impossible love that celebrates the unbreakable bond between father and son.
Directed by: Richard Roxburgh
Starring: Eric Bana, Franka Potente, Marton Csokas, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jacek Koman

The Tale Continues…

January 27th, 2008

You may have caught wind of a new company launched by Passion Pictures called Strange Beast. Like Psyop’s Blacklist, Strange Beast has built a roster of (mostly young) international talent that’s hard to fit into existing categories. Their initial lineup is strong: Encyclopedia Pictura, Amautalab, Lorenzo Fonda, The Blackheart Gang, Takeo, James Price—

Wait a tick! Back up. Was that The Blackheart Gang I saw? Indeed it was!

tbg.jpg

It’s been about a year and a half since we posted TBG’s Hieronymus Bosch-inspired mini-opera, “The Tale of How.” After hearing nothing about them since that time, I’d assumed they’d disbanded and sold their souls to commercial interests. But it appears I was too hasty.

Not only is the merry bunch still around, they’re planning an epic sequel entitled “The Tale of Then.” Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. More information can be found on their blog.

Their site holds further gems in the Work section, where you can review what the Gang has been up to since their big debut. Their projects are satisfyingly epic, odd and charming—often at the same time.
