Samaritans “Vectorscope”

January 23rd, 2008

A while back, we posted a spot for non-profit helpline Samaritans entitled “Doodle” that featured the animation work of Christian Bevilacqua (among others). Christian is back for Samaritans, this time directing “Vectorscope,” produced by Therapy Films.

“Vectorscope” employs a few tried and true mograph devices (namely the ubiquitous ribbon), but it has some poignantly innovative new tricks up its sleeve as well. The transition from bird to barbed wire is especially nice.

Samaritans should be heartily applauded for funding such lyrical work and eschewing the standard approach to this sort of messaging.

National Television for Fair & Square

January 23rd, 2008

dots.jpg

National Television channeled modernist aesthetics of yesteryear in “Dots” and “Pattern,” two new spots for British lending agency Fair & Square.

“Dots” really does it for me. The narrative element bolsters the voiceover’s message without ever departing from the campaign’s minimalist look.

What’s funny is that without the jazz soundtrack, posterized time effect and flickering luminescence, these spots wouldn’t feel as retro as they do. I’m not complaining; I’m just wondering if that was a conscious decision on the part of the agency to target a different audience, or if the idea of flat, full frame rate vector graphics is simply out of vogue.

Nicolas Cage stole Chihuahuas

January 23rd, 2008
0122_nicolas_cage_eva_00.JPG Actress Kathleen Turner’s upcoming autobiography “Send Yourself Roses” includes dirt on her Peggy Sue Got Married co-star Nicolas Cage. The movie was directed by Nic’s uncle Francis Ford Coppola and apparently the future Ghost Rider was a pain in the ass on set, according to Page Six:
"Everything Francis wanted him to do, he went against to show that he wasn't under his uncle's wing. Which was ridiculous. Oh, that stupid voice of his and the fake teeth! Honestly, I cringe to think about it. He caused so many problems," Turner writes. "He was arrested twice for drunk driving and, I think, once for stealing a dog. He'd come across a Chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket."
A Chihuahua in the jacket, huh? That’s bush league. One time I smuggled a Great Dane and two Pomeranians in my pants. I’ll let you read between the lines on that one… ladies. (Hint: I love puppies!)

Adnan Ghalib says Britney wants his baby

January 23rd, 2008

While his wife filed for legal separation, Adnan Ghalib made appearances last night on Entertainment Tonight and The Insider where he said not only his he still with Britney, but she wants to have his baby. He claims Britney bought the rumored pregnancy test because she was "hoping" to be pregnant because of her "natural maternal instincts." NY Daily News reports:
Ghalib conceded that Spears, 26, was not aware he was going public about their relationship and insisted they are still together despite reports she kicked him to the curb.
"It's far from over, but then I don't have the ultimate say in this relationship," Ghalib said.
Britney and Adnan were then spotted together last night in Malibu as evidenced by the attached pics. Adnan is looking a little out of it though. Could be from all the vodka he's downing to score those "exclusive photos" later. Of course, if I knew I had to have sex with Britney Spears, my face would look like the Nazi's at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. But probably more melted.

Amy Winehouse Video Checked by Police

January 23rd, 2008

Amy WinehousePolice in London are studying the video that allegedly shows singer Amy Winehouse smoking crack, they confirmed Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the U.K.’s Sun ran stills from the tape, which shows the troubled chanteuse, 24, smoking what the paper claims in a crack pipe.

Now detectives at Scotland Yard are looking at the footage, the police confirmed. (Despite claims the tape had been “seized,” officers were, in fact, handed a copy of the video by reporters from the tabloid yesterday.)

As of now there is no investigation launched into the singer, a spokesman added. “Officers will be reviewing the footage and will then assess the footage and ascertain whether any action is to be taken.”

Shortly after the news of the alleged drug use surfaced, Winehouse (who’s gone back to her burnette roots after a short stint as a platinum blonde) was photographed leaving her East London home for an appointment with her doctor – something her rep says was part of her ongoing treatment.

“We are deeply saddened and shocked by this accident,” said publicist Mara Buxbaum in a statement. “This is an extremely difficult time for his loved ones. We’re asking the media to please respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation until the facts are known.”

Ledger, 28, was found dead Tuesday in a New York apartment. A police source says that two bottles of prescription sleep aids were near the body.

The Fate of Dr. Parnassus

January 23rd, 2008

After the shocking death of Heath Ledger yesterday, some fans wondered about The Dark Knight, while others were curious about Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. While the bat-flick wrapped earlier, Variety reports that there was still a lot of work ahead for the Python alum's next movie: "The $30 million indie pic wrapped the London leg of its shoot last Saturday. The production team has moved to Vancouver, Canada, where blue-screen work was due to start next week and continue until early March." (Ledger's name was a key part of the indie flick getting so much money.)

So far, there has been no statement issued by the producers on the film's plans, as I imagine they're all suffering from a mixture of shock, grief, and panic. The project, which also includes the likes of Christopher Plummer, Lily Cole, and Tom Waits, focuses on "the story of an ancient traveling show which arrives in modern London with a magical mirror that can transport its audience into fantastical realms of the imagination."

Between this and the Don Quixote turmoil, I would not want to be in Gilliam's shoes.

But I do want to leave you with this sad, yet touching, quote that Variety posted from Gilliam, which he said last month during an interview: "Heath is extraordinary. He's just so good, and he's going to be a film director. He's watching everything, and he's going to be a much better director than I will ever be." (Ledger had been planning his directorial debut with The Queen's Gambit.)

UPDATE: According to US Weekly, the production was shut down.
