DVD Review: Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
July 8th, 2008A so-so spin on the classic sci-fi tale.
The first of what would be countless screen adaptations of this Jules Verne story, this 1959 version of Journey to the Center of the Earth offers some unique sights from its sets, although not much else. Its stand-in iguana dinosaurs, plodding pace, and cardboard characters do little to make audiences want to take this journey with them. The…
Movie Review: Gunnin’ for That #1 Spot
July 8th, 2008In order to dribble their way towards NBA glory, eight players take it to the hoop in Beastie Boy turned filmmaker Adam Yauch’s new film.
To misquote a memorable lyric from Beastie Boy turned filmmaker Adam Yauch, when it comes to dribbling towards NBA glory, eight of the twenty-four high schoolers prominently featured in his latest doc Gunnin’ for That #1 Spot, take it to the hoop because they can’t, they won’t, and they don’t stop until they come to Rucker…

Discuss: Do Sacha Baron Cohen’s Antics Bother You?
July 8th, 2008Filed under: Comedy, Documentary, Casting, New Releases, Celebrities and Controversy, 20th Century Fox, Movie Marketing, Politics
Call it performance art, savage prank behavior or audacious social satire. Call it whatever you want, but there's no question Sacha Baron Cohen is at it again. As Erik reported back in March, the Borat star began surfacing as his Bruno alter-ego in a variety of absurd situations likely intended for the movie starring the effeminate European character. Wearing chains at a Kansas church? Check. Weirding out Ben Affleck? Check. Airport dancing? Yep. Now, bizarre reports of a cage match in Arkansas, where attendees paid for admission expecting to watch a fight and instead witnessed two men get naked and lock lips, suggests Cohen is still at it, more than three months down the line. Not only that, but he appears to have pulled the stunt twice: First on June 5 at the Four States Fair Grounds in Texarkana, then again at Fort Smith's convention center, where a character named "Straight Dave" apparently selected a planted audience member to challenge him. Whether or not you agree with Cohen's brash style -- he claims to take inspiration from Michael Moore's stunts --
the actor definitely constructs his gags with very specific ideas in mind. Borat took a stab at American stereotypes of foreign cultures, but Bruno looks like it's geared more towards attacking homophobia -- specifically as it manifests in middle America. However, it's hard to say whether or not such excessive spectacles will manage to correct misinformed perspectives or reinforce them.

Why Sunday?
July 8th, 2008
Finally!
The reason(s) why Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban named their bundle of joy Sunday Rose Roast….
Grandpa Kidman told the Australian media that Sunday was the name of Australian artist Sidney Nolan's muse.
Gramps revealed he and Grandma Kidman had suggested it to Keith and Nic. He says, "I have read a bit about Sunday Reed and her husband John - she was a key mover and shaker in the arts around the beginning of the century. The name Sunday struck me as being a nice name for a woman, so my wife and I mentioned it."
The source goes on to report that Sunday Reed was famous for her patronage of the arts, but also for her relationship with Sidney Nolan. Reed and her husband took part in a menage-a-trois type affair with the artist, which lasted nine years in the 1930s and resulted in Sunday becoming Nolan's muse.
Will little Sunday Rose Kidman Urban 'inspire' future artists in the same way?
We kid.
Urban's brother Shane revealed the baby's second name was a tribute to their late grandmother, Rose.
"It's a wonderful wonderful thing, I'm so, so proud," he said.
As for Roast, Perez says, "Sunday is my cheat day where I can eat whatever I want, and a roast sounds yummy this week. So, Sunday Roast Kidman Urban Cruise it is!"

Dopey Stings Sting
July 8th, 2008
Keep her away from the dark side!
Sting's teenaged daughter, Coco, is reportedly getting quite cozy with junkie god Pete Doherty.
Shambolic Dopey was spotted lying down in Coco's tent at the Glastonbury music fest recently.
Needless to say, Sting went ape shit when he heard the news, sources report.
Apparently, Pete and Coco's friendship is 'blossoming' after they met at a Soho jazz bar in London.
Pete's supposedly helping her develop her songwriting and guitar skills.
Why take advice from a drug-addled loser?
We don't get it. His songs aren't even as good as Winehouse's!
Looks like Sting's daughter rebelling to us!
Coco, whatever you do, don't share his needle or…fuck him.
God knows what you'd contract.
Grrrosss.

Where's LezLo????
There was no Lindsay Lohan to be seen on the set of Ugly Betty on Tuesday.
America Ferrera and the rest of the show's stars seemed happy to be back at work, for the time being.
A possible actor's strike may put a halt to production.
For this year, the show's third season, Ugly Betty is being shot in NYC. Many of the production folks that had been with the program for the first two years have been laid off.
Sucks for them!
Lindsay is expected to be back on the show this year in a multi-episode stint.
How will she bare being away from saMAN for so long????

Injured!
July 8th, 2008
Professional skateboarder, Ryan Sheckler, has just injured himself.
The star of his own MTV reality show, Life of Ryan, has reportedly broken his arm just a few days before he was set to compete in a skateboarding competition.
An inside source says, "Multiple breaks to the arm have caused a bone chip to be a primary source of the continuous dislocations. The recent break has caused ligament damage and will surely force a reason for surgery, or at the very least, a plan for surgery in the near future. He has refused a cast and will compete in the Maloof Money Cup and upcoming DEW Tour in Cleveland, Ohio."
The 18 year-old was believed by many to be up for the first place prize of $100,000.
Let's hope that his skateboarding while injured doesn't make it worse. It doesn't sound like a wise idea!
Sheckler will begin filming for Season 3 of his MTV reality show this week.
The episodes will air in the next few months.
