Wednesday, May 16th, 2007Eli Guerron is Osito
Wednesday, May 16th, 2007Eli Guerron’s montage is more technical than most of the work we post on Motionographer, but it’s wicked polished and infused with a solid design sensibility. Eli’s pretty young (by my standards, at least), but he’s one of those guys who works his gonads off to improve every chance he gets. And it shows.
There’s another important reason I’m posting Eli’s reel. Notice how he lists his roles for each project at the bottom of the screen? This should be standard practice for all freelance/individual reels (regardless of how technical they are). This kind of full disclosure is not only helpful and informative, it’s ethically the right thing to do. I’ve heard of more than one case of people slapping projects into their reels even though all they did was pass by the designer’s desk on their way to the coffee machine and suggest that the deer head be chartreuse instead of pink.
The way I see it, reels are a necessary evil. Evil because they essentially reduce every designer/director/animator/visualist to a 2-minute binge of bite-sized eye candy. Necessary because they do conveniently represent (however distorted those representations might be) individuals and studios in an industry that crowns king he (or she) who can grab the most eyeballs in the shortest amount of time.
So since reels aren’t going away any time soon, let’s at least be up front about what we, as individuals, have done. Let’s be clear about exactly how much influence we had over the end product. I’m not saying that every reel needs to have complete credits running at the bottom like some obnoxious, self-flagellating ticker tape of humility. I’m just saying that Eli’s example is a good one to follow. Simple and easy to implement.
When I recut my reel (which unfortunately is comprised almost entirely of medicore student work), I will do the same. I hope you will, too.

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007Adaptation vs original screenplay
Wednesday, May 16th, 2007For many different reasons authors who adapt their own books into screenplays are not so common. I would appeal to the reknown saying: “zapatero a tus zapatos”. Even though there are some like Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas, Casino), Michael Blake (Dancing with Wolves).
It would be unfair to say that an adaptation can not be as good as an original screenplay, I guess because it is a specialty to write one.
In Colombia that country at the south of America where i was born, (I will be mentioning it a lot) Film industry is being possible in our movie theaters. To give an idea of what I´m talking about: 24 movies were produced in the past 3 years and growing (that much ha). Most of the stories come from adaptations. A movie like Maria Full of Grace which screenplay is an original by Joshua Martson, a californian writer, producer, director is an 80% american movie.

“The reason for this letter is to let everyone know that their prayers have truly helped me. I am so blessed that you care enough about me to be concerned and will continue to live in this brighter state with all of you by my side during this trying time. We are all lights of the world and we all need to continuously inspire others and look to the higher power. You are all in my prayers. Godspeed.

The National Enquirer is reporting that Farrah Fawcett‘s cancer has returned.
The Enquirer has good authority on this subject, they were the first to report that Farrah was battling cancer, breaking the news in the October 16, 2006 issue before the actress confirmed it.
Their details of her new condition are very sad:
Farrah thought she had beaten cancer but during a recent examination doctors found a small, malignant polyp.
Surgeons could have removed the polyp but feared that might increase the risk of spreading cancerous cells according a source close to the former “Charlie’s Angels” star.
The ENQUIRER has learned that doctors now plan to place a small metallic seed in the cancerous area, which will emit radiation that hopefully will destroy the polyp.
The 60-year-old actress was diagnosed with anal cancer last September. On Feb. 2, physicians pronounced Farrah cancer-free after a grueling regimen of radiation, laser and chemotherapy treatments. She had two two strawberry-sized cancerous polyps eradicated by the treatment.
Get well soon Angel!!!!
