Warner Bros. Puts Up Teaser Page for ‘The Dark Knight’

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

There's not a whole lot to see, but Warner Bros. has thrown up a teaser page for next summer's The Dark Knight; a sequel to Christopher Nolan's very awesome Batman Begins. So far, all we're getting is what looks to be the Batman symbol going through warp speed; it's a cool image -- one that's definitely a tease -- and you can't help but wish they gave us a little bit more. A release date, perhaps? Or how about a nifty tagline that went something like, "Bats eat spiders for breakfast?"

Thankfully, it appears all that commotion surrounding The Dark Knight's Chicago production has calmed down; there was a time not long ago when every day brought new spy photos from the set -- some of which (like those pics of Heath Ledger as Joker) were fake. Since then, however, things have remained fairly quiet. A little too quiet if you know what I mean. Some reports claim Warner Bros. will release their own photo of Ledger as Joker at some point this summer in order to beat out the eventual set leaks. Since The Dark Knight is set to be released on July 18, 2008, maybe they'll give us something on July 18th of this year? Who knows. But anyway, this time around Batman (Christian Bale) helps LT. Gordon (Gary Oldman) and newly appointed DA Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) track down a crazed killer who goes by the name of Joker (Ledger). Meanwhile, the very cute Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is lingering around, while Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) returns to help Bruce Wayne collect cool gadgets and, of course, Alfred (Michael Caine) will be there to put him to bed each night.

First Photo From Jude Law’s ‘Sleuth’

Friday, May 11th, 2007

It's been 35 years since the original film hit theaters, but don't tell Michael Caine that -- it might make him feel old. Empire Online has our first look at the much talked-about Sleuth remake, starring Jude Law (in the role Michael Caine took on all those years ago) and Michael Caine (in the role Laurence Olivier played opposite a much younger version of himself). Say all you want about how overrated Jude Law is, the guy worked hard to put this project together; single-handedly nabbing Caine and director Kenneth Branagh for what, I hope, turns out to be one of the better remakes to hit theaters in some time.

In the film (which was based on the Tony Award winning play by Anthony Shaffer), Law will play an aspiring actor who's summoned to the sprawling country estate of an author (Caine) whose wife has been fooling around with the younger, more attractive thesp. Once together, the two men engage in an assortment of mindgames which may or may not turn deadly. With a script from the great Nobel Prize-winning Harold Pinter (who, funnily enough, was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1996, and also took park in an extra-marital affair in the early 1960s), this one is sure to entertain. Heck, if it were up to me, I'd give Caine an award for playing both roles in different versions of the same film 35 years apart. That's gotta be worth something. No word yet on a release date, though I'd expect it to arrive sometime next year.

We Can All Breathe Easy — MPAA Gives ‘Captivity’ an R Rating

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Jeez, how to stretch this news into something approximating two meaty paragraphs ... ok, remember that Captivity flick that snagged some free press by posting forbidden billboard advertisements in places it wasn't supposed to and recently got bumped back a month in the process? That one with Elisha Cuthbert that sounds a lot like "Saw meets ... another movie just like Saw"? OK, well that movie finally earned a rating (and probably a thorough tongue-lashing) from the MPAA.

According to Bloody-Disgusting.com, Roland Joffe's* Captivity is rated R for "strong violence, torture, pervasive terror, grizzly images, language and some sexual material." I can practically hear the concerned moms now: "Hmm, pervasive ... torture ... Well, as long as its only some sexual material, sure, you can see it." And I can only assume the "grizzly" part was a typo, because nothing in the Captivity press notes indicates that there are any bears in this movie. (Although I certainly wouldn't be averse to a Saw rip-off that threw a ravenous grizzly into the mix!)

* And what ever happened to Roland Joffe anyway? Obviously I'm not knocking the horror genre, but to go from The Killing Fields and The Mission to ... Captivity? What happened there? (Hey that's over two paragraphs. That was easy!)

Lindsay Lohan to Strip Down for ‘I Know Who Killed Me?’

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Recently, (actress?) Lindsay Lohan has gone on record saying she's all about taking on more serious roles. In fact (and I quote): "I want to get a nomination. I want to win an Oscar. I want to be known for more than, like, going out ... I bust my ass when I'm filming and when I have time off, yeah, I like to go out and dance." Well, the good news is that La Lohan has finally found a role in which she can utilize her strongest assets -- those being her sexy body and the desire to dance. The bad news ... well, I guess if you're a horny teenage boy, then there is no bad news here. While appearing on The David Letterman Show last night, Lohan confessed that she'll be playing a stripper in her next film, I Know Who Killed Me. Oh, and I should also mention that her character will be kidnapped, tortured and have her legs cut off. (Yup, here's where we need to do a background check on screenwriter Jeff Hammond.)

When asked more about her stripper role, Lohan said the audience will be seeing "a lot" of her, and that the pic is a "really dark, scary film." Hmm, so will Lohan be taking it all off in the name of an Oscar nomination (someone forgot to tell her that torture flicks aren't necessarily the type of material Academy voters are attracted to)? Or, will we get another Demi Moore-type performance, a la Striptease. Damn that flick! And damn you Demi! Oh c'mon, you know this film just moved up a few notches on your radar -- I mean, who wouldn't want to see La Lohan's naked disfigured attractive body dance around a pole? Heh, now all those nights out at Scores strip joint here in New York City make a whole lot more sense. She was doing research! Well guys, you won't have to hold your breath for too long, as Saw meets a naked (but more serious!) Lindsay Lohan (aka I Know Who Killed Me) arrives in theaters on July 27.

‘Stardust’ Poster Features Everyone — Except Sienna Miller?

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

It looks like Sienna Miller's "It Girl" status might have beeen officially revoked. Kung Fu Rodeo has a look at the poster for her new fantasy film Stardust, except Miller didn't seem to make the cut. Directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake), the film stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Claire Danes, Charlie Cox, and finally Miller. However, she is nowhere to be seen on the full page ad; even Ricky Gervais, who has a tiny role in the film managed to snag a spot. The film is based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, and centers on a young man who crosses into a magical realm on a romantic quest only to be swept up into a greater destiny. The project has stayed pretty low on the radar in the crop of summer blockbusters, but after we have had our fill of web flinging and galactic robot battles, it might be a nice change of pace.

I'm not all that surprised Miller is not front and center on the poster since her character is a pretty minor one in the book, so I would assume the same holds true for the film. It seems that not that long ago Miller was everywhere -- granted, they were usually out-of-focus paparazzi pictures. But it seems that the failure of Factory Girl went way beyond dashing The Weinsteins' Oscar hopes; could it be possible that Miller's face on a poster has become something of a liability? Hopefully when Miller takes over for Lindsay Lohan in the upcoming Dylan Thomas biopic she will finally earn some movie poster real-estate.

First Teaser Poster for Kidman’s ‘The Invasion’

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

This seems to be the week for posters for Nicole Kidman movies. Just on the heels of the release of the first poster for The Golden Compass. ComingSoon.net put up the new teaser poster for Kidman's sci-fi thriller The Invasion. It's no secret that the project has had a bumpy road to production. Back in March, the LA Times reported that Warner Bros. was less than thrilled with the first cut of the film by the German director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall). The studio then hired The Wachowski Brothers to re-write almost two-thirds of the script, and James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) took over as director for some costly re-shoots.

This "Body Snatchers' inspired film stars Kidman and Daniel Craig in a story about an alien virus that claims its victims when they sleep, turning them into mindless drones. Kidman stars as a scientist separated from her son, who might be the source of a cure for the virus. Since this is only a teaser poster, they aren't giving much away with this one. Surprisingly there isn't even a glimpse of either of the film's two stars. There is also a website for the film up now, but there isn't much to offer beyond a glimpse at the poster and a plot synopsis. The release date for The Invasion is currently set at August 17, so WB is almost out of time to generate some buzz for the film that goes beyond talk of a production that might have gone off the rails.

Warner Bros. Launches New ‘Harry Potter 5’ Website

Friday, May 4th, 2007

When I saw the name of Warner Brothers' new website for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I was concerned. I worried that JoinDumbledoresArmy might be some sneaky plan by the Bush administration to draft our youngsters into fighting overseas. But after closer inspection, the site appears legit. It allows you to enroll alongside Harry, Ron, and Hermione to fight the Dark Arts and also to send messages to Dumbledore's Army that will appear on the website. The messages that have been left so far range from the heroic -- ("We must band together against the Dark Lord," says Larry R.) to the cryptic --("I'm of Brazil, yeah!!! LOL," says Eder F.) to the profound -- ("EEEEEEEEEEEE!" says Katie A.)

Once you enroll in the Army, you can download wallpapers, skins, banners, images, and buddy icons. I must admit, I did not enroll -- I fear a 26 year-old man signing up for "Dumbledore's Army" would surely put me on some sort of pedophile watch list -- but I did play the site's game: "Dark Arts Defense." The object of the game is to master spells. I won my school's spell-ing bee three years in a row, but alas, those skills did not translate. You have a wand, they give you symbols and you're supposed to trace them out in the air to defeat your opponent. There's a training course, but I got cocky and skipped right over it, which was a mistake. I must say, the game was a lot of fun, but playing it was quite a blow to my self-esteem. The current high score: 318,071. My score: 6.

‘American Gangster’ Posters Hit JoBlo: Paging Tony Montana …

Friday, May 4th, 2007

The movie may not be due until November, but JoBlo's Movie Emporium has the posters now: Ridley Scott's American Gangster has officially begun the promotional lifecycle. The film -- which was slated to be directed by Antoine Fuqua until he fell off the project and Ridley Scott stepped in -- revolves around the New York drug trade in the '70s -- and features Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. (And the director's chair wasn't the only switcheroo: Originally, Benicio Del Toro was cast in what would become Crowe's role.) The plotline revolves around an ex-dealer who actually has a change of heart and works with a NYPD narcotics officer to try and stop the flood of heroin that hit New York in the '70s -- but with Scott attached to direct, look for great action and more than a little grit (as well as smoke-filed rooms, venetian blinds and rain, too).

The posters look great -- there's one for Washington and one for Crowe -- and to me the most interesting things about the posters are first, the observation that Universal's marketing department doesn't even have to show all of Washington and Crowe's faces for us to know who they are -- and if that's not proof of super-stardom on their part, I don't know what is. The second thing -- which leapt into my mind unbidden as I looked at Crowe's poster, as seen here -- is that between the black-and-white look and the focus on well-dressed men packing heat, I got a real Scarface vibe off these posters. Time will tell if American Gangster is fit to fill Tony Montana's elegant, blood-soaked shoes; the film is currently set to open November 21st.

Six Posters for ‘The Simpsons Movie’ Pop Up Online

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

While there has been no shortage of Simpson's movie marketing, I'll admit that some of it has been downright original, including real-life Kwik E Marts and competing Springfield's. Today on Present Cinema (or Настоящее кино if you are brushing up on your Russian), six new international Teaser posters have been put online. This time around, they have abandoned the oh-so-familiar donut iconography and gone for straight character posters. There are five solo posters featuring Lisa, Maggie, Marge, and of course, Bart and Homer. Both Homer and Bart however, get an extra poster chronicling our favorite "horrible act of child abuse." Not to mention we get another partial look at a naked Bart, which Patrick had already warned us about. At least for decency sake they use the shot from the film with a French Fry covering up anything too specific.

Unless you have been in the witness protection program for the last year, there is probably not much I need to tell you about the highly anticipated big screen version of the long-running show. Already some early reactions to the film have hit the web, and so far most of the feedback has been positive. Although complaints about "side-character" screen time have popped up -- which seems like good news since it's not exactly the worst thing a fan could say about the film. Until The Simpson's Movie opens in July, we will just have to content ourselves with the next tidbit of news to head our way.

First Photo from Aussie Noir ‘The Tender Hook’ Released

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

Well, even though the last "Australian" to attempt a boxing film wasn't exactly a raging success, you can't blame someone else for wanting to take a swing -- and yes, that pun was intended, I couldn't help myself. The Australian newspaper The Age posted a photograph from the Australian noir The Tender Hook. Written and directed by Jonathan Ogilvie, the film stars Rose Byrne, Matt Le Nevez (who made a name for himself as a serial killer in the Australian made-for-TV film The Society Murders) and Hugo Weaving. The story is less a sports tale and more of a "noir-ish" take on a love triangle between a young boxer, an aristocratic Englishman and Byrne's romantic opportunist. The film takes place in 1920s Redfern, Australia, and was expected to shoot on location. However, some local controversy sprung up when the production moved to Melbourne for the sake of some "incentives" to the filmmakers.

The photo is the first look at Le Nevez as the soulful boxer, with plenty of sepia tones to remind you that this is a period piece. Production started in February and Ogilvie is still filming, so a release date might still be a way off. Ogilvie has claimed that he has been trying to make this film for over ten years now, so I'm pretty sure that he's going to take his time to make sure he does it right.
